A sincerely flattering compliment would be when someone says you elevate (insert task
here, however mundane or nonsensical) to an art form.
One would hope all experts would be considered artists in their chosen profession
or endeavor. Lacking that, at least striving for it?
All said, many people could call themselves artists.
Or do we equate artists with a higher level of performance aside
from proficiency, knowledge, or other tangible metrics?
What if an artist requires a model or image
to copy or duplicate - are they less of an artist compared
to someone who conceives it entirely in their mind?
Is one more creative or skilled?
Aren't we supposed to feel moved or inspired in a good way by the experience or display?
It shouldn't require a thesis to explain the reasoning or
causation. Art speaks for itself.
Being coached to feel a certain way...might as well "read the book."
Consistency keeps handmade items orderly and neat.
Stacking dinner plates can only be so organic before they don't nest properly.
Sloppy knitting that results in mismatched sizing is a failure.
Or assembling a bunch of rings into chainmaille -
just because it's easy doesn't mean it'll be done well.
In jewelry, others have impossibly complex designs. No way
will I make those any time soon, if ever!
There is so much to learn in any of the countless styles, never mind specializing.
This artist thing is relative. Most people have at least one relative who is artsy so
osmosis and genes might be the only way I'm getting there. Until such a time,
every once in a while I do create art.
