I made the mistake of bringing my girlfriend into a specialty handmade glass store. You could go downstairs and see the workers in action. People love this stuff because it is both a status symbol and well-made. She wanted everything.

Lacking a bottomless wallet, I had a brilliant idea how to acquire a piece. They craft fine goods, I do the same. So I proposed an exchange. Find someone at their company who wants my jewelry in exchange for one of their goods, made by the person doing the trade.

The dictator at the helm thought otherwise. I've worked for dictators before and understood his personal assistant was too afraid to comment on the idea. Not a peep, as if Big Brother would crucify her. It was frustrating because I sensed she took a fancy to it.

Their website screams with references to old-school techniques and craftsmanship so the idea seemed like a nobrainer. I'm certain the employees and forward-thinking trendsetters would have the same answer. All of my friends collectively agreed it was an awesome idea!

It would be a great morale booster for employees, a way to invigorate them knowing they could use their skills and time to get something that may otherwise be inaccessible. Further, the press release about the innovative program would be free advertising for the company.

Two skilled artists would use their talents to get something they desire but can't make. Isn't that why we create art, to share something beautiful with another? Fancy glassware and handmade jewelry are just the means to an end, a symptom and solution wrapped in one.

With the power of the internet, barter has the potential to be all that and a cup of tea. It is the ultimate manifestation of free will and marketplace economics. I just want to take care of myself and my immediates whether friend, family, or fellow artist. There are many ways to realize the true value of your talents without the almighty dollar pissin' in the punch bowl.

Every artist I know has an affinity for multiple mediums. No one is that uptight! Make me an offer, make it a win/win. If I need or want it, consider it done.
