Part of the excitement of vending is that it could be a record breaker either way.
Selling a purely luxury, often expensive, item like jewelry is
not easy peasy like frozen treats on a 100deg summer day.
It's hard to predict, and there's always competition.
For me, one sale could conceivably be as much as a normal year's
worth of sales. The reality is closer to the
opposite. Potential consumers proportionally decrease
as prices increase. Fortunately, my handmade precious metal jewelry starts at $10 so it's
doable for most budgets.
After talking with a couple who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary,
it seemed certain they would be buying a ring somewhere soon.
His wedding ring enjoyed the extra breathing room afforded by significant weight loss;
it decided to explore the world and never looked back.
I took pictures of hers, measured his size, talked
about pricing, the whole gamut. They were
shopping around and would get back to me with an answer.
They called a few days later with good news.
It had to personify the other ring and look deliberately accidental.
Think of David Attenborough describing it: noticeably freeform;
asymmetrical shape; varying
width and thickness; abrupt and smooth transitions; a lazy zigzag
morphing into the widest part; placid surface.
It was 14K yellow gold so I made a fresh batch.
Then melting and rolling and hammering, oh my! And some welding.
I didn't want noticeable tooling marks on his so hers was a bit more
primitive in that sense. Plus, it's 50+ years old and has battle scars.
It was a show-stopping sale for sure but the devilishly elusive season-ender
didn't come out to play. Anytime now, don't be afraid.
