It would be easy to think we were landing on the moon with the recent Artemis mission. Every story says it's going to the moon. It's not. It didn't even get close enough for orbit. By that logic I've "been" to every country, city, town, and hamlet.

Let's continue with that theme. First black person to see the far side of the moon. First woman to see the dark side. First Canadian to see the dark side. First astronaut named Reid to see the dark side. There must be at least 100,000 records when you consider all the parameters!

How is it a "record" that it's the first mission towards the moon in 54 years?

Then there's the farthest distance from earth for any human. Again, at least 1000 more records there. The diversity of the crew? Basic math says there are another 10,000 ways to create a new record. Most powerful rocket? It was apparently necessary with this payload but is there some passive-aggressive significance other than having more thrust?

Fastest re-entry speed. Fastest speed in a spacecraft. Again, not so noteworthy other than being a larger number than before. How is it a "record" that it's the first mission towards the moon in 54 years? Everything's a first, everything's a record, you just need a politician to spin it.

I suppose the space agency needs to cater to the short attention span of social media and phone addicts. Make it a headline, create stupid records. Did the Guinness Book of World Records certify any of them? It's the equivalent of a person who lacks any self-esteem and self-worth screaming for attention, begging for someone to listen to their pointless ramblings.

In case anyone has forgotten history, basically none of this is revolutionary. The misplaced arrogance, undeserved acclaim, and self-aggrandizing should be tempered by the fact that it was done WAY better more than 50 years ago, by the equivalent of technological Neanderthals, who repeatedly landed on the moon! The scientists should be ashamed of their petty accomplishments, not jubilant.

Still, I would rather them spend billions on a decades-long space program, which benefits mankind, than piss away many times that amount in a week on the Iran war replete with myriad war crimes and untold misery. In that context it is immeasurably a record.
