Music is the most accessible art as it's made with our voice. It also seems to be the most touching given the number of tears it elicits. Several inspirational stories with talented unknown (opera) singers caught my eye. I could listen to Prodigy all day long so how does opera fit in? I don't know but it feels good.

Do we "pro-rate" what we are expecting to hear? Are we more forgiving of kids' foibles or inadequacies because they are new at it? What if an adult is just as new...do we expect them to be better just because they are adults? Judging a book by its cover may get you close but when it's off, it really blows it. Hearing beautiful music is one thing but watching the performance and knowing the story elevate it to a higher level. How much more appreciation does one have knowing the entirety of its existence?

We need more of this.

My first opera moment came courtesy of a teenage British high school duo. His voice is equivalent to Pavarotti's. There are numerous documentaries about his/her/their journey.

Another stunner came from an unlikely source. I didn't learn about his life until recently and it's a story alright! His rendition of Nessun Dorma is truly on par with the best. And of course, this rendition done by Sarah Brightman is spine-tingling, definitely her best. And then she nails that last note and holds it for dear life.

Then you have the goth rocker ready to stun the audience with some mean metal. I mean his bracelet, not the singing. After you learn his story you begin to understand the transformation taking place. How he stayed as composed as he did must have been difficult. You don't witness something this profound without feeling some of it.

I propose a theory regarding the audience's reaction to the goth rocker. You could see the frustration and confusion as they flipped through a mental rolodex of stereotypes, none of which applied. The music did not match who was making it. The conflict slowly resolved itself in various timeframes among the viewers. The whispers grudgingly crescendoed like they were stuck in purgatory as the other senses realized they were experiencing something great.

We need more of this. My objects - be them jewelry, sculpture, artwork - will never elicit such responses. Besides, it's kind of hard to weld rings when you're waving your arms around like an opera singer! No, but seriously...few artists can pull off emotion like singers. Because we all have sung and know its power. And paintings can't talk.
