Usually aftermath implies there is a huge mess or destruction left behind. Not here. Au contraire, there is almost nothing remaining. This was an exhaustive and definitive silver melt. Some pieces had been in inventory for many years. Tiffany, Gorham, Reed & Barton, the list goes on.

Complete coffee sets, hundreds of demitasse cups and saucers, massive bowls and dishes, plates and trays of every size, platters, utensil sets, collectibles. Made last year or two centuries ago, it didn't matter! These objects were beautiful and sometimes rare but no one wanted them.

It was a shame to melt some of them. The Gorham repoussé bowl given as a gift to Jerry Lewis (the comedian). An Andrew Taylor cigar box owned by one of the highest ranking admirals in WW2, the father of submarine warfare and design. One of the largest flasks I've seen, made by Birk's (nearly a liter!). A huge Tiffany Paul Revere reproduction bowl. Collectible plates, medals, ingots, and whatnots. Dozens of large serving utensils from Stieff, Towle, Whiting, Wallace, Gorham, International Silver, and more.

A house is more important.

They were an investment and regardless of my attachment or their awesomeness, they were converted into a down payment. A house is more important. Purses, powder/vanity jars, vases, some collectibles, and a few odds and ends were saved because they should return more than just silver value. Silverware handles were put aside to make jewelry. It will take time to get inventory like this again so if a lull puts a roof over my head then no complaints.

As a grand finale, the final purchase added $300 worth of silver for the bargain price of $60. Two of those a day and I'd have a high-paying part-time gig! The package to the refiner approached 60 regular pounds. Thanks to flat rate boxes and registered mail, shipping was $22 as opposed to $142 with insurance another $48 compared to something like $250. The Last Rites List is all gone for now.

I have a new interpretation for aftermath: Before, I had a lot of silver; after, math says differently. Doh! While I may have surrounded and protected my silver objects previously, touché as I will be surrounded and protected by their reincarnation.
