Category: Tool Review

I am a demanding user who values quality items that are backed with good customer service. I make my own tools so I have a different perspective than the average consumer. Designs are called out for what they are whether good, bad, or indifferent. Trademarks and copyrights are the intellectual property of their respective owners and used herein for reference, educational, and informational purposes.

SUMMARY - First, a stark warning that needs mentioning before anything else: This company is a pile of shit when it comes to customer service, a bunch of fucking useless morons and idiots who may or may not respond within a week and probably won't fully answer or even understand your questions or concerns. You are buying this for its massive power, not for good or timely customer service.

Pretty much every other company like this has a USA phone number to call. I just hope nothing else goes wrong. They don't handle criticism well, suffice it to say. They are clearly in the wrong so own up to it and fix it instead of being arrogant, scapegoating pricks, right?! The optimist in me says it is a language barrier. The pessimist, a cultural barrier. The realist, an intelligence and common sense barrier.

The opressive weight of knowing you are going to pull your hair out dealing with them creates enough stress and anxiety to make self-harm seem like a better option! That being said, I'll put my negative observations aside so I can impartially focus on the review. There are good things about this machine.

In hindsight, FINAL RATINGS (0=bad to 10=good, YES/NO, N/A, or text; hover over topic for specific information)
  • Item being reviewed: ComMarker Titan 1 200w MOPA Laser
Q: What's this all about anyway?

A: This is one of the most powerful desktop/consumer laser systems available.
  • Manufacturer: ComMarker
Who makes this and what is their history?

A: A Chinese company who makes laser componentry for many industries.
  • Retail price: $10,000
What is the manufacturer's suggested retail price?

A: Discount codes can be found with minimal searching. Bundled packages can save additional money. They have a reward program but it's fraught with restrictions and limitations that are listed nowhere. Basically, it amounts to fraud, which is illegal. I got into a big tuss about it yet it still remains unfixed. My approval is not swayed by chintzy and deceptive offers so even though I would get points for such referrals, it severely violates my ethics (anyone with a conscience should feel the same way). Others basically beg you to use their discount codes and I'll leave it at that.
  • Appearance: Professional
Q: Simply, how does it look? While subjective, does it have clean lines, professional appearance, etc.?

A: This looks like a serious piece of machinery.
  • Packaging: Hit or miss
Q: Is it thrown into a box or packed like a new smartphone?

A: From what I've read, they have improved over the past year but still have a way to go. Several items were damaged in transit due to poor packing. Like no-brainer stuff. And if their poor customer service was ever in question, getting replacement parts is even worse.
  • Initial set-up time: A few hours
Q: After removing contents from box, how long before it can be used?

A: A bit heavy for casually moving around, it's best to find a dedicated space for it. Some assembly is required.
  • "Plug and play": Assembly required
Q: Is everything included or do you need to purchase additional equipment, supplies, or parts?

A: Expect to spend about two hours getting it unpacked, assembled, and ready for action. They could have made several simple improvements to make assembly easier and quicker. Dialing in perfect laser settings will take time and experimentation.
  • Additional costs or equipment: Probably
Q: Not included with the purchase, what else is required and how much does it cost?

A: They make many accessories and add-ons (for instance, they have four rotary tools). Your needs will dictate what is appropriate. Lightburn software is a wise and relatively inexpensive investment, almost a necessity. Ventilating the vaporized materials should be a priority as well.
  • Set-up time for each use: Minimal
Q: From being stored properly and completely, is it grab-and-go or much more involved?

A: Basically turn it on, get a program loaded, adjust the focus, and away you go. Adjusting the software parameters will be the most time-consuming.
  • Storage provisions: None
Q: What or how is the equipment stored when not in use as provided by the manufacturer?

A: Electronics and precision mirrors/lenses don't like dust and this is as exposed to the elements as can be. I made a nearly airtight removable enclosure from sheet and angle aluminum that acts as a cover and shield, replete with two laser safety windows and doors, generous LED lighting, handles, and exhaust and cord ports. Or you can buy theirs.
  • Storage time: Minimal
Q: How long soea it take to store it safely and completely, cleaned and lubed, liquids drained, etc.?

A: Turn it off. Unplug it. Cover it if you have one.
  • Ongoing costs: Unsure
Q: What is the cost of using the equipment: replacement parts from wear-and-tear, expendables, supplies, etc.?

A: They say the laser core has a life of 100,000 hours, or roughly 12 years of 24/7 use. However, there are other parts that can fail so it remains to be seen.
  • Maintenance: Some
Q: What is expected to keep the tool working properly: periodic maintenance, lubing, etc.?

A: Dust and lasered materials will be its biggest enemy so there will be a fair amount of cleaning involved (like all laser engravers, so nothing new). All other maintenance is forbidden.
  • Usability: High
Q: Is it complicated to use?

A: There will be a learning curve to utilize all its power and features. However, to get rolling on simple designs is fairly easy.
  • Functionality: Generally good
Q: How well does it do its job?

A: When everything works as intended, it's a breeze. These machines can be finicky and particular but should work consistently once the ideal parameters are determined.
  • Robustness: Sturdy
Q: How well-constructed or flimsy is it?

A: It's designed to work 24/7 so it's intended to be used as an industrial-ish tool, not just a once-in-a-while hobbyist toy.
  • Value: You decide
Q: Based on price, performance, and function, is it worth it?

A: This depends on what you need and what you're willing to pay. If I didn't own a CO2 laser already I would have bought another brand that is much more powerful and much more diverse for about the same money (a combined 1200w fiber - egads, that'll melt the sun - and 130w CO2 laser). This one is overpriced in comparison. I'm considering returning it despite the huge restocking and shipping fees I'd pay to do say.
  • Adjustability: N/A
Q: Can it be easily modified to accommodate different situations?

A: The laser parameters are controllable through the software. Yes, there is an adjustment for the arm height, additional lenses to increase the engraving area, and some accessories to make it more versatile. Many laser system in this class/category have similar adjustments.
  • Meeting expectations: Yes
Q: Does it work as well as others say or the manufacturer claims?

A: Could they have made it better? Yes, but they'd price themselves out of the market. It does what it is supposed to nearly all of the time.
  • Innovation: Not much
Q: How ingenious or clever is the design or concept?

A: No complaints but nothing special. Some features are advanced but it's not rocket science, just convenient.
  • Results: Excellent
Q: What is the quality of the finished product or process? Anything below 6 - realistically, an 8 - is not decent quality.

A: This will do what you need, fast, and run forever.
  • Timeliness: Excellent
Q: How do the results compare to the amount of time it took?

A: It is a production machine with speeds to match.
  • Skill level: Basic
Q: What mechanical aptitudes or skills does one need to use it?

A: It could be your first laser but having previous experience will go a long way. It's all about learning the settings, which any idiot should be able to master with time and practice.
  • Documentation: Borderline poor
Q: Does it have detailed instructions, whether written (which it should no matter what) or on-line?

A: Assembly instructions are mediocre. There should be a detailed part list and corresponding references in the assembly instructions given several screws are the same pitch with different lengths. Yeah, you can figure it out one way or the other but that's their job. To get it dialed in best you'll need videos, literature, and information from other sources. They just make the machine, not how to do anything else.
  • Customer service: Beyond absolute shit
Q: How quickly do they respond, can you speak with someone on the phone, are their answers satisfactory?

A: Everyone who complains about bad customer service is under-exaggerating. Positive feedback can only be found on the fake, censored forums ComMarker sets up to wromote their products. Replies take up to a week if they respond though they may or may not actually answer your question. Having no phone support is inexcusable.
  • Comparative: Decent
Q: How does this compare to similar machines within its price range?

A: Aside from the lack of other 200w lasers, the base machine is reasonably priced and does just about the same thing as the others. While it lacks some needed versatility and user-friendliness, it's competitive in most situations.
  • Recommendation: Mixed
Q: My personal assessment of the device - basically, would I buy it knowing what I learned about it?

A: I value customer service more than the average person so they don't get a solid recommendation due to this alone. Their products have the ability to be exceptional but fixing their manufacturing problems, product issues, and poor customer service/relations (without their help and wullingness) is not possible.

Final thoughts: It is a beast of a machine whose price tag is not for the faint of heart. Had I not gotten a bundle package with an additional (holiday) discount I might have settled for less. I needed absolute power and this machine is good enough. In hindsight, I would have gotten something better from another company.

This company's lack of support and unhelpful customer service department tank their overall rating. If they had sent me a free unit to do a video review on I would have smashed it to pieces before even using it given my experiences with them. Should they be faulted for such pathetic customer non-service? Partly, but they are following what every company is doing these days: ignore and dismiss the customer until they give up, which has become the ubiquitous new paradigm.

Given that lasers vaporize material, it behooves you to take appropriate measures to ensure clean air (likewise, protect those eyes, get a better set of safety glasses than they provide). My bundle included the fume extractor system. The expensive filters don't last long so I'll use an external exhaust system whenever possible. They also make a generic enclosure to fit around the entire machine though I made a better one for less.
