Not your typical cabinet, this is an enclosure for a desktop laser.
It's an ambitious project that saves a little money
versus the laser manufacturer's version, which is
less functional and definitely not as cool.
Wood is flammable, hard to clean, absorbs
smells and materials, and warps and
expands. Full laser-proof acrylic sheet would be too costly and too
delicate. Aluminum is lighter and more expensive than steel
and it won't rust. Aluminum it is.
Easy peazy. Cut five sides, bolt them together, get a window/door, seal everything, and it's done.
Then one caveat popped to mind.
Workpieces exceeding the cabinet dimensions create the biggest challenge.
Rotary devices are likely to stick out, too.
Removing the cabinet entirely, like would be necessary with the factory version,
kills ventilation and laser beam protection. And it could be a major production.
I wanted my cabinet to remain in place permanently.
This required some clever engineering. I imagined several possibilities.
For this project, design time eclipsed assembly time. However, it's wise to
think feverishly now than have hindsight kick me later.
Option one is vertical sliding panels on left, right, and front walls that
would move independently, not interfere with each other or the workpiece, and lock at any height.
Easy in theory, tall order in reality.
Quicker to use and make, option two is curtains.
They should manage the beams and fumes better overall if they were made from strips
as they would drape over the edges instead of stopping at the highest part
of the workpiece. It wouldn't work for every scenario, however.
A hybrid system might be best, but I'll start with the basics.
Attaching curtains could be done afterwards without much fanfare.
Regardless, some oversized or weird workpiece would be too big and the cover
will come off anyway.
As a deal-finding hound, I sourced parts from more than a dozen suppliers.
With that many sellers, it's not a question of
if, but how many sent "items not as described" (through intention or ignorance,
there's no difference, it's fraud either way). Two, in this case, which is about normal.
It's more airloose than airtight but will
vent vaporized particles successfully. Escaping laser beams
are literally blinding so preventing them was non-negotiable.
The only major change is not incorporating a door - the inside is accessed via the sliding
front panel.
All the planning paid off immensely.
Basic tools were sufficient though my non-basic equipment was invaluable.
The pneumatic riveter especially - I wasn't setting hundreds manually.
